Position Description

To advance the mission of the church by providing strategic, visionary, and effective 


pastoral leadership within the congregation, focusing primarily on the development and 


deployment of leaders


Status & Accountability


This is a called, ordained position that reports to the Lead Pastor and entails


membership in the Great Lakes City Classis.


General Expectations


1. Maintain a vital and growing relationship with Christ through the exercise of basic 


Christian spiritual disciplines including prayer and meditation on scripture


2. Demonstrate high level of moral integrity understanding that personal conduct impacts 


the larger work and witness of the church


3. Collaborate with staff and lay leaders in supporting and advancing the mission of Fifth 


Reformed Church: Growing disciples who make disciples


4. Proactively engage and build relationships with direct reports and volunteer leaders in


order to facilitate their growth and continuous learning


5. Communicate in a friendly, positive way in order to facilitate forward progress


6. Maintain appropriate confidentiality with regard to sensitive information


7. Agree to, and abide by, the Staff Team Covenant

Responsibilities 


1. Collaborate with the Lead Pastor to provide leadership that effectively advances the 


mission of the church.


2. Champion our congregation’s investment in developing Christian leaders. Craft, 


implement and oversee an intentional plan for leadership development that identifies, 


develops and deploys leaders both within and beyond the congregation.


a. Partner with the Children’s and Student Ministry Directors in designing and 


implementing leadership development models for children and students.


b. Collaborate with the RCA Commissioned Pastor program leadership where 


appropriate in the development of ministry leaders and church planters.


c. Give primary leadership to our Teaching Church relationship with Western 


Theological Seminary.


3. Exert pastor-level leadership that adjusts to the current needs of the congregation and 


promptings of the Spirit.


4. Partner with the Lead Pastor in charting the preaching ministry of the church and share 


preaching responsibilities.


5. Along with the Lead Pastor and Pastoral Elders take responsibility for overseeing the 


general spiritual health of the church through the systems of assimilation, care and 


spiritual development.


6. Collaborate with, and supervise, the Children’s Ministry Director and the Student 


Ministries Director, providing theological vision and oversight to child and student 


7. Serve in an ex-officio capacity on the Administrative Board.


Qualifications
The successful candidate will: 


1. Desire to serve in a team-based ministry and demonstrate ability to work collaboratively 


as one of a primary leadership team.


2. Embrace a discipleship-centered strategy of mission.


3. Participate in a reproducible model of discipleship for the purpose of growing disciples 


who make disciples.


4. Possess excellent gifts of teaching and preaching.


5. Demonstrate ability to build and lead teams.


6. Demonstrate passion for leadership development through an ability to lead leaders and 


to develop leaders of leaders.


7. Demonstrate ability to cast vision in ways that inspire others to follow.


8. Believe in, and be willing to lead the church in, processes of biblical church discipline.


9. Express openness to participating in our church multiplication effort, up to and including 


the possibility of offering pastoral leadership at different church plants and venues for a 


period of time.


10. Possess a high level of emotional health that is evident in personal interactions.


11. Possess excellent relational skills, organizational skills, and communication skills – both 


verbal and written.


12. Have at least five years of experience functioning as a pastor in a local church.

The Good Lie

You are invited to a premiere showing of the new movie, “The Good Lie” starring Reese Witherspoon
and brought to you by Partners in Compassionate Care (PCC). The movie depicts the plight of the 
children of Sudan as war forced them to flee their villages and ultimately resulted in many being relocated 
to the United States as refugees.
The movie premiere takes place on Thursday, October 23 at Celebration Cinema RiverTown on 
Thursday, October 23rd 3728 Rivertown Pkwy, Grandville, MI 49418. A pre-movie program begins at 
6:30 pm and the film begins at 7 pm. Tickets are $12 each and are only available through PCC at 
www.pccsudan.org or by calling 616-356-2464. Seating is limited and tickets are required.

It has been a blessing to me to serve the children of Fifth Church as a Shepherd in both the “Flock” (Preschool) and the “Gate” (Elementary) for over six years. I have shared the first day in the Flock with nervous kids as they struggle to leave Mom or Dad’s side and venture into an unfamiliar room full of kids they have never met. I have experienced these same kids developing and moving on to the 56’ers, becoming independent and confident in new situations. 

This passage from Isaiah 6:8, “And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” got me started down a path full of many rewards and challenges. I had no teaching experience other than parenthood to prepare me for being a Shepherd at Fifth, but God showed me that I needed to stop waiting and just answer His call. Over the years, He has been faithful to work out the details.

I never would have thought that growing up as an extremely quiet and shy kid could turn into an asset later in life. However, I believe God took that experience from my childhood and showed me how to see through the eyes of many shy children to help them. Help them first to get through the door, but more importantly to understand that they have gifts and talents too. Children thrive on praise that may seem insignificant to adults. Telling a child that he is a good jumper, that she is good at solving puzzles, or thanking the whole group for helping to pick up their toys can really turn a child’s day around. Building up kids so that they can know and understand more about God’s love for them is a wonderful thing, and I have been blessed to know many great kids and volunteers over the years.

The children’s ministry is currently looking for a couple of new ministry partners. I would encourage anyone, whether you think you have what it takes or not, to say “Here am I.” God will use and bless you and the children at Fifth through your step of faith!
